The Darwin Awards

July 24, 2009

30.   Watch 101 new movies (19/101) (more info)

Rating ***

Today I watched The Darwin Awards (2006). The film includes several full and partial re-enactments of “Darwin Awards“, most of which are actually urban legends. Deaths incurred by bad decisions and outright stupidity are probed by a forensic detective and an insurance-claims investigator.

The Darwin Awards salute the improvement of
the human genome by honoring those who
accidentally remove themselves from it…

The stories in The Darwin Awards are integrated into a narrative about two characters grappling with their own destinies. Burrows is a brilliant detective with a special talent for profiling criminals. Siri is a hard-nosed insurance investigator whose steeliness and “throw-caution-to-the-wind” attitude is exactly the opposite of Burrows’s thoughtful hesitation. When Siri’s employer hires Burrows to create a profile for potential Darwin Award winners, who are costing the insurance company a fortune, the two begin a search for the answer to what makes these people tick.

I gave it *** because I loved the premise of the movie and the cameos (specially the guys from Myth Busters). Overall, however, it wasn’t as funny as I expected and I wouldn’t rewatch it and definitely wouldn’t buy it.

This was Chris Penn‘s last movie before his death on January 24, 2006, the day before the movie’s premiere.

I couldn’t find a trailer that could be embedded so you have to click here if you want to see it.
